I have two favorite holidays. One is Thanksgiving and the other is Christmas. I love Thanksgiving for two reasons; food and family. Thanksgiving this year is going to be small. Its just going to my son, my boyfriend, and me.
Last year was an interesting Thanksgiving. My boyfriend and I just moved into our apartment in Florida after being homeless for 8 months. All of our household items were in a storage unit outside of Atlanta.
We managed to finagle a Thanksgiving feast by cooking a turkey in a flimsy aluminum pan from Wal-Mart. We picked up our sides at Boston Market. Since we had just moved into our apartment, we really did not have an idea on how the oven heated. Normally, a pretty decent size turkey can take about 5 hours to cook. Our turkey ended up taking 8 hours to cook. In the interim, we ended up running to Wal-Mart twice to pick up much needed items, like a knife and serving spoon. At the end, it all came together and the food was the best I had in a long time.
Even though last year’s Thanksgiving was a mess and chaotic, I was so thankful for being able to have Thanksgiving in our own place. We had spent the last 8 months without a place to live.
This year’s Thanksgiving is going to be better! So far, our menu is going to consist of the following, all homemade, in a kitchen the size of a small closet; turkey breast, mashed potatoes and gravy, stuffing, collard greens with ham hocks, cheesecake, and pumpkin bread.
2019 has been quite the roller coaster and the fact I can spend Thanksgiving with my loved ones is a blessing I am extremely thankful for. What are your plans for Thanksgiving? More importantly, what is your menu plan? (Please note, the featured image on this blog post is a stock photo!)
